John was the son of Joseph and Catherine Sykes, he was born in Armadale in 1886.
John was a Mechanical engineer and a Sergeant in the Armadale Company, and he was mobilised the day war was declared.
John spent some time on the East Coast of Scotland with the 2nd/10th Royal Scots.
On the 18th January 1915 he was sent to work with the Army Ordinance Corps, on special engineering duties in munitions work, and he later went to a specialist school for the mechanical side of big guns, and from there he was passed on to Russian’s, ultimately being attached to the Italian Artillery where his services were very much appreciated.
